10 tips to protect your home from Winter damage and safe money

Here are 10 easy reminders to help you protect your home from winter home hazards and enjoy the season. There's still a lot of winter left!


  1. Avoid frozen pipes by draining and turning off the water from exterior pipes.

  2. Drip water from hoses and keep them safe in the garage or cellar.

  3. A little adjustment on doors and windows will help you save energy avoiding cold air flows.

  4. Close your chimney when you are not using it, it will keep your house warmer.

  5. Drain all remaining fuel from your lawnmower. If you don't do that, it may not work next spring.

  6. Turn the switch on your fan to run clockwise at a low speed to help distribute the heat in your home.

  7. Checkup your windows. Maybe they need new sealing or replacement. 25% of your heat loss in your home can come from uninsulated windows.

  8. Make sure your gutters are clear to help prevent ice damming and gutters causing leaks.

  9. Use daylight hours to warm your house by opening the drapes during the day and closed them at night.

  10. Give your furnace and thermostat a full test. Quick maintenance can help you avoid further inconveniences.
